Tips on How to Promote Diversity in the Workplace

There are various ways an organization can promote diversity and create a more interesting and optimistic work environment for the employees. The companies must create a workplace where they value and embrace alternate perspectives (Reynolds, 2016). The organization can encourage the staff by involving them in various activities. It is essential that everyone in the company has a basic understanding of the several cultures that they are exposed to in the workplace.

It is important to educate the managers about understanding diversity, putting into consideration that they are in charge of teams. When the managers have basic knowledge about culture, it encourages the involvement of workplace diversity; ultimately leading to greater assets in the business (Grossmann, 2018). The managers are responsible for educating and training employees to encourage diversity and make each individual aware of the policies and rules set out. Furthermore, when applying for a new position at the organization or when managers consider hiring an employee, the organization should set clear guidelines specifying everyone’s acceptance equally.

One of the ways to promote diversity in the workplace is by creating a culturally diverse holiday calendar (Grossmann, 2018). Organizations can make the colleagues connect by hosting small events where the employees share different cultural food, music and fashion. In larger corporations, it is often difficult to host events due to overstaffing. An alternative way is to send out wishes via email. Organizations should avoid scheduling company related activities which may contradict with employees’ cultural events or religious holidays. For instance, a barbecue party during a time when the employees are fasting or scheduling meetings during the time of prayer (Reynolds, 2016). For religious accommodation, the company should provide a multi-faith room for the employees to perform their religious prayers as desired. The ultimate goal for a company should be to motivate the employees to interact and communicate with each other to build a strong relationship.

In conclusion, diversity should be highly encouraged in the workplace. Both the corporation and the employees will benefit from a diverse workplace. Creating an acceptable and welcoming work environment for different cultural background will increase productivity and profit as the employees will feel more comfortable and stay optimistic. The aim of an organization should be to determine various methods and techniques to create a culturally diverse environment.
